Improvements to downtown Baton Rouge have begun. Homes in Spanish Town and Beauregard have had sidewalks and porches added to them to encourge the residents to get outdoors and meet their neighbors.
Currently the DDD is looking for a way to connect the city with the river. In this past year alone they were able to connect the city with the levee by adding a jogging/bicycle road on top the levee along River Road.
Other improvements to the city that have already been enacted is the Trolley that runs from 10:30-2:30, Mon. - Fri. and is free to the public. A parking garage on the corner of Third Street and Convention Street, open till 2:30 a.m. every night. A shuttle now runs everyday from the Journalism Building on LSU's campus to the Shaw Center for the Arts. The Shaw Center for the Arts has been a great success. It was designed as a show case for visual and performing arts, and contains a very popular sushi bar named Tsunami. Main Street Market is also very popular. Every Saturday there is a Farmers Market, and the 1st Saturday of every month is the Art Market.
In the next few years other things are expected to pop up. A new state museum is planned to open in January of 2006. The Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Park, designed as an upscale hotel, is in developmental stages. All rooms are to be 1930s art deco. Capitol Park is a new development of the downtown area to have a campus like feel, and all art deco style buildings. Also in the works is a new form of signage: way finding signage, interpretive signage, and trolley stops.
To help with the business that are currently located downtown (mainly restaurants) customers are allowed to eat and drink on the sidewalks. (How buildings relate to the streets and to the passerby is very important).
